Beach Blog – April 2018

Honoring the environment and Mother Earth is easy this Earth Day, April 22nd, for Lincoln City locals and visitors alike.

All you need is a trash bag, a good rain jacket, a pair of gloves and seven miles of beach. Help us keep our section of the Oregon Coast clean by combing our beach for trash and debris.

CELEBRATE MOTHER EARTH

Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues. In 1990, Earth Day went global with over 200 million people in over 140 nations participating, according to the Earth Day Network, a nonprofit that coordinates Earth Day activities. Today, more than one billion people participate in Earth Day activities in 174 countries worldwide.

Here, on the Oregon coast, we appreciate our beautiful surroundings and want to keep it pristine. We also appreciate all of the volunteers who take the time to pick up trash on our beaches. It is not a glamorous endeavor, but someone has to do it.

As you may know, karma has a way of rewarding those who perform good deeds. Participating in beach clean-up efforts will hopefully make you feel good about making a positive impact on our local environment, but there might be other rewards as well. You might find a beautiful glass float… courtesy of the Finders Keepers Float Fairies. Every day, from mid-October to Memorial Day, these anonymous volunteers hide hand-made glass floats on our beach for lucky beachcombers to find. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a Good Samaritan, picking up trash on our beaches, was rewarded for their hard work by finding a glass treasure? You never know when you might find one!

Even if you are unable to find a float while cleaning up our beach, bring a bag of beach trash to the Visitor Information Center, located inside the Lincoln City Cultural Center at 540 SE Hwy 101, and fill out an entry form for our Trash for Treasures contest. This program gives environmentally-minded beachcombers a chance at winning a signature Finders Keepers glass float.
