The Shack Makes a Comeback

Beloved Gleneden Beach watering hole, Salishack Tavern, reopens to fanfare and offers elevated pub fare.

For those that remember the iconic Gleneden Beach pub, Salishack Tavern, now there’s reason to celebrate. Raise a glass of ale because the shack is making a comeback, and they want you to experience the newly renovated building and menu.

The building, which opened as a tavern in 1942, has had several owners over the decades. But the iconic sign posted outside the building, as well as the old-school charm and vibe, remain. New owners Doug Schuyley and Steve West, from Portland, bought Salishack in October 2018. In just 10 months, they’ve remodeled the building from head to undertow.

“We tore out the interior walls and floors, repainted the outside and installed a brand-new kitchen,” says bartender Chris Burgess. “Since we got a new kitchen, it gave me the opportunity to revamp the menu.”

Burgess, whose culinary background includes Executive Chef at the acclaimed Avalon Bar & Grill in Talent, Oregon, has helped craft a menu that elevates classic tavern fare. “Our signature item is the pulled pork bbq sandwich,” says Burgess. “I smoke the pork in a BBQ pit, which I built. The tenderness of the pork is just amazing. The pork also goes good on our tacos, which are served “Gringo Style” with salsa and homemade coleslaw.”

Good tavern food needs to be complimented with great beer, and Salishack offers it in spades. Featuring microbrews from all around the region, their 11 tap handles are constantly rotating with new suds to imbibe. “When I got here, all we had on tap were domestic beers like PBR and Rainer,” declared Burgess. “I told the owners, “Oregon has the best beer in the world!” Let’s fill our taps with Oregon beer.”

The beer and food might invite you into the Salishack Tavern, but it is the customer service and neighborly attitude that will bring you back. “We are a neighborhood tavern,” proclaims Burgess. “When you move or visit a new town and are looking to meet people, go to a neighborhood tavern. Chances are, you’ll make a new friend or connection there. That’s the magic of a place like Salishack.”

Whether you are a visitor or a local, the Salishack Tavern invites you to come to relax and enjoy good company. To learn more about Salishack Tavern, call 541-614-4248.
