WATER SPORTS
Lincoln City, OR. Because Lincoln City is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the east by Devils Lake while also being slipped between two rivers, water sports opportunities are limited only by your imagination. For the more energetic who love to yell “Surf’s up!”, surfing, body boarding, wind surfing and kite boarding are just the thing. Lincoln City has ten miles of steady waves from Roads End at the north to Salishan at the south. Those swells encounter rocky reefs offshore, piling the water into mammoth waves just waiting for the rider. A popular spot is Roads End State Park. And if you need equipment or instruction, help is a short distance away at the Oregon Surf Shop, the Lincoln City Surf Shop, nelscottreef.com, or Safari Town Surf Shop. Even the Lincoln City Department of Parks and Recreation offers instruction for surfers.
Each year between mid-October and the end of December, Lincoln City hosts the Nelscott Reef Tow-In surf contest. When the 30-foot swells are headed for the beach but still two days out, the call goes out to professional surfers all over the world to hasten their journeys to Lincoln City for this spectacular contest. To get an idea of the impressiveness of this unusual event, visit nelscottreef.com.
The energetic can also get a workout on Devils Lake. The 680-acre lake is a popular spot for water skiers and jet skiers, particularly from Memorial Day through September when the weather is calmer and the lake is warmer.
But if it is a quieter water experience you seek, Devils Lake, the Salmon River to the north, and the Siletz River to the south can provide the right conditions. On those waters you can take a swim or enjoy a peaceful kayak or canoe trip, take a motor boat fishing or sightseeing, jump in a bumper boat with the kids, or take the whole family on a pontoon trip around the lake.
If you do not have the equipment to enjoy those activities, do not despair. Blue Heron Landing on the west side of Devils Lake offers the opportunity to enjoy the lake on various watercraft, including paddleboats, pleasure boats, fishing boats, kayaks, hydrobikes, and Wave Runners. They also offer Moby Bumper Boats, mountain bike rentals, and a large selection of Wave Runners. Blue Heron Landing has a private picnic area and dockside store for fueling up the boat or renting fishing equipment.
