A MECCA FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
Lincoln City, OR. Every photographer knows that there is a photo in front of you, at your feet, or just around the corner. But Lincoln City and the central Oregon Coast are replete with special photographic opportunities. In addition to the stunning pink and yellow sunsets that slide quietly into the Pacific horizon, inland areas offer rare opportunities.
If it is wildlife you seek, capture the regal stance of the Great Blue Heron on Devils Lake and in Siletz Bay, the harbor seals on the spit in Siletz Bay, or, from Cascade Head, an aerial view of a pod of gray whales. Elegant blossoms and the interesting shapes of cultured trees can be memorialized at the Connie Hansen Garden. The natural scenery of the coastline from Cascade Head and the mystical wooded road leading there offer images that create a different appreciation of the area. Solitary rocky outcroppings and silhouetted driftwood of Siletz Bay satisfy the urge for drama, particularly when the fog slips in at their feet or lavender sunset skies surround them. And if it is man-made dignified structures you want, shoot a roll on the Drift Creek Covered Bridge, the Drift Creek Falls Bridge, or the heavily turreted Victorian Stampfer House on the Siletz River, which was built for the filming of “Sometimes a Great Notion.”
Many views, particularly those of wildlife, must be shot from a distance in order to capture them at all. So don’t forget to bring your binoculars and all your appropriate lenses. And if it is inspiration and new techniques you desire, visit the Frame Cellar to view the photography of Ralph Elliott or contact the Sitka Center (541-994-5485) for photography classes.
