Some of the flying experts who will join us this fall!
iQuad

TEAM iQUAD, The More Lines the Better- iQuad is a group of dedicated four line kite fans who came together in the spring of 2006 with one goal in mind - the promotion of quad team flying. This type of stunt kite flying has been a mainstay of European kite flying for many years, starting back in the early '90's.Using fliers from all over the United States and Canada, iQuad is primarily composed of six core fliers: John Barresi, David Hathaway, Todd Rudolph, JD Fabich, Adrian Flanagan & Steve de Rooy but also incorporates other able fliers into mega flies any chance they get. Seventeen fliers joined iQuad at a recent festival for a giant quad routine. Team iQuad is infectious fun to watch. They won two People’s Choice awards at the 2006 Washington State International Kite Festival.

DAVID"MONKEY BOY" HATHAWAY- of Burnaby British Columbia. Co-founder of iQuad and a longtime dedicated Rev flier, ‘Monkey Boy’ is also the founder of REVisions, among the first web sites and discussion groups totally devoted to Revolutions. 2007 was his first season in Master quad competition. He is also a member of the multiline pairs team “Furious George”.

BARRY "BAZZER" POULTER- from Lakewood Washington. Originally from the UK and focusing primarily on the single line arena for many years, Bazzer has gained a reputation as one of the top kitemakers around with Glued to the Blue. In the mid-2007, he picked up a Rev with renewed interest and earned a permanent alternate position on the iQuad team with his performance at WSIKF '07.Bols

JD "FABULOUS" FABICH- of Rogue River Oregon. Flying since 1998 (9 years old), 'Fabulous' Fabich has been flying about half of his life. A regular at the Brookings and Lincoln City kite festivals, he is proficient in both dual and quad line kites and has been flying with the iQuad team since 2006.

STEVE de ROOY- of Victoria British Columbia. A veteran Rev flier, Steve took a break for several years in pursuit of traction kiting and other interests. Now back in full force, he is always quick with ideas and excitement- a crucial factor for any team. Steve has been an integral member of iQuad since August 2006.

GARY MacEACHREN, from Brookings, OR became interested in sport kites after attending the inaugral Southern Oregon Kite Festival in Brookings, but it wasn’t until 1996 that he started flying sports kites. Once he actually flew a sport kite he was hooked, every weekend and many nights after work he would fly, fly, fly,. After his wife complained about him spending so much money buying kites he bought a sewing machine and that winter started making his own kites. In the following spring the Oregon Kite Company was formed to sell his hand made custom sport kites. The “Gull 8.5” is the kite he's most proud of and that along with it’s predecessor the smaller “Gull 7.0” are the two Oregon Kite Company's kites most people are familiar with. "I’ve had the pleasure of handmaking kites for fliers throughout the Northwest and with the help of the internet for both national and international fliers as well." With the “Gull 8.5” design now being fabricated in China and distributed by Gomberg Kite Productions, Intl a whole new arena of kite flying demonstrations has opened up for him. He looks forward to showing people how easy it is to fly a sport kite and then being able to place a factory made kite in their hands to try out. Like Ray Bethel, the world's premier multiple kite flier from Vancouver, British Columbia and Carl Bragiel, the one man kite team from Amity Oregon, he flies 3 kites simultaneously and would like to encourage everyone interested in flying multiple kite routines to contact him for tips on technique and of course for obtaining a set of Gulls, one of the best kites available to do the job.

In 2009, Amy won the NW Sport Kite League Championship for Open Outdoor Unlimited Experienced Multi Line Ballet. CONNOR DORAN- from Bend Oregon, is a High School Junior at Mountain View School. In his second year of competition, Connor won the experienced Indoor competition at the 2009 Windless Kite Festival in Long Beach, WA and a month later won 2nd Place in the Experienced Indoor competition at the Lincoln City Indoor Kite Festival, thus taking the NW Sport Kite League 2009 Experienced Indoor Championship. Connor has been competing with great success outdoors flying his favorite Revolution kites as well. He qualified for the 2009 AKA Grand National Championships in Experienced Multi Line Ballet and Precision as well as Novice Duel Line Ballet. Click here for video of Connor

PHIL & BARBARA BURKS, from Portland OR, are regulars at the Lincoln City Kite Festivals and also travel each spring to a kite festival on the Gulf Coast in Texas. They were a part of the group that broke the world record with 21 giant Octopus kites on one beach at one time in Lincoln City at the 2008 Summer Kite Festival. Along with their giant octopus kite they have a large array of red, white & blue kites and enjoy watching Phil & Barbara fly their kite stacks side by side!

JERIMY COLBERT- from Lincoln City, Oregon, he specializes in assorted appliqué shapes and Cody war kites. His skill allows him to fly both indoors and outdoors. Jerimy is not only a great daddy, but profoundly patient and skilled in teaching youngsters to fly kites indoors and outdoors.

KEN TUMMINIA- Ken is from Lincoln City, OR and is a colorful and regular feature of the kite festivals in Lincoln City. Ken's first experience with kiting was watching his grandfather make box kites and launch them from his vineyard tractor. Single lines are his attraction, since they can be launched quickly. Ken is also known to fly stunt kites. If it is big stuff and appliqués you enjoy, watch for Ken's displays. If you ask Ken what motivates him to move from festival to festival, he’ll tell you very simply that he does it because it is fun!

DALE RAY- From Olympia, Washington, Dale works in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator. He has been an avid kiteflier for the last 30 years and began flying with a stunt kite. As he got a little older, he started adding a few mid sized inflatable kites because he thought they were cute. For the past 5 years he has been purchasing kites for the big inflatable show kite side of kiting and really enjoys this aspect of the kite world due to the challenge of flying the "Big Toys" as it keeps him on his toes!

Ronda Brewer

RON GIBIAN- from Southern California, has found inspiration for his kites and aerial sculptures in nature. Whether it be insects, birds or fish all have been sources of inspiration for his single surface kites as well as his more complicated three dimentional objects. "What I want to do in the sky is to create inspiring visual images" said Ron. "I want to inspire, excite and provoke those who are looking at the works, to confront their own sensibilies so that they can see the sky and the world in a new more open way".

AL WASHINGTON- lives in Portland, Oregon and has been dubbed the "Dancing Man" and "Twinkle Toes." His personal performance is every bit as wonderful to behold as the performance of his two line stunt kites. Al was instrumental in forming several stunt kite teams and competed with Team Invisible Wind during the early and mid-90's. As a member of this team, Al traveled all over the US and competed for the World Cup in Australia in 1995. His second team, Indeskyze took second in Masters Team Ballet and Precision at the 1998 American Kitefliers Association competition in Ocean Shores, Washington.

RONDA BREWER & LINDSEY JOHNSON- are from Lincoln City, Oregon. Ronda became involved in kiting in 1985. She has been invited to countless events throughout the country to fly her kites, run events, judge kite makers’ competitions, or teach classes on kite building, knot tying, kite flying, rokkaku kite and battle techniques. Additionally, her skills at teaching and leading children in kite making have made her a favorite attraction at festivals all around the country. In her kite circles, Ronda is known as the “Tyvek Queen” for her use of DuPont Tyvek in the construction of her award-winning, hand-painted creations. She is a fierce competitor on the rokkaku kite battlefield, where her aggressive and determined style has earned her the nickname “The Taz.” Her motto: “I may eventually look my age, but I will never act it!” Her newest passion is for indoor kite flying. She has helped organize the Lincoln City Indoor Kite Festival for the past three years.

Lindsey has been flying kites for several years. The first serious bite of the kiting bug came along when his wife, Ronda Brewer, went to work for Lincoln City’s Catch the Wind Kites in 1985. As with many other kite fliers, he got hooked first on dual line sport kites. He flew for the enjoyment and challenge of getting his kite to do things that he had never seen anyone else do. Ronda also got him involved with children’s kite making and other kite making activities.  He accompanied her to some festivals but, for the most part, he was known as "The Phantom” – conspicuous in his absence from those events. In 1997, he became more visible and matured into a single line kite flier and kite maker.  One of his first creations, a painted fabric and sewn appliquéd della Porta kite named “Zegalope”, earned him the Mixed Media honors at the 1999 American Kite fliers Association National Convention.

Over the years Ronda and Lindsey have collaborated to create many unique and innovative products. In 2004 they launched their company, PhantomStarDesign.com. Their Tyvek no-sew kite kits are used in workshops around the world by schoolteachers for science and art classes, for corporate teambuilding exercises, by artists, and as individual kite projects for all ages. These kits allow the builder to enjoy the experience of creating their own kite without the need to know how to sew. Their goal is to bring kite making to the masses.

PENNY LINGENFELTER- is a Master Revolution Kiteflier whose passion in life is to share the joy of flying her Revolution 4 string kite with people of all ages. Penny and her husband Steve come from Port Orchard, WA to entertain us with her costumed kiteflying routines. Even though she mostly crashed the first day, she said that when she held a Revolution Kite for the first time she knew she was hooked! The pull of the kite ~the sensation of soaring~ the idea that it was controllable with brakes and reverse direction, sent visions of a dancing kite all the way through to her soul. This propelled her to a future she could never have foreseen. Her goal was to gain her credentials on her path to become a professional kiteflier. She's succeeded, having placed in the top 3 at National level in Outdoor, Innovative and Indoor kite flying over the years which helped to keep her focus and perfect her skill. Now, she enjoys the fruit of her labors, flying in coliseums, indoor shows, outdoor shows, churches, parades, and many other events. Lincoln City once recognized her as their choice for the "Kite Ambassador of the World" and she strives to live up to the title, eagerly giving kite lessons whenever possible. You will find her performing; even pulling audience members out to join her in some of her costumed routines. Now our question is, "Have you ever seen a Kite Fairy?" No? Come and see Penny at the Lincoln City Fall Kite Festival where you can become a Kite Fairy too!

ROD & CINDY THRALL- from Newberg, Oregon have been flying kites since 1992 when they purchased their first kite on a weekend anniversary trip to Lincoln City! Many years and many kites later, they enjoy traveling all over to share their toys. They are known for their giant Peter Lynn Teddy Bear, custom Jordan Airform kites and large ground display. The Thrall's most recent kiting adventure took them to Thailand, where they participated in Thailand's 9th International Kite Festival, winning the 'People's Choice' award for their Bear Family kite display. Rod & Cindy are both accomplished, award winning kite builders. They are making a name for themselves with their colorful custom made banners, line art and large inflatable kites. Cindy has also made some really neat line anchors resembling little kids standing, holding a kite. The Thralls are no strangers to the Lincoln City Kite Festival, noted for flying the large, background kites on festival weekends. Look for Goldilocks to join the bears in the near future!

BOB SERACK- from Astoria, Oregon. Bob is a longtime supporter of the Lincoln City Kite Festival, has been involved with banner and kite making since 1989. Bob spends his time on the beach with large single line kites, wind toys and tending banners. He also enjoys flying Revolution stunt kites plus flying single and stacked combinations of Revolutions.

KITEBOARDERS (SURFERS) AND KITE BUGGIERS- these guys will amaze you as they use kites to power their surfboards in the ocean and buggies on the beach. See them at the festival, weather permitting!
